B.A. Hons (Music) PGCE (Music in Education)
Anna has been working in education since 1984 doing music workshops, being a secondary school class-music teacher (PGCE music in education) for a while, teaching musical instruments privately, and working with dance. By 1993 she was getting a lot of work so decided to create a company – RowdyMusic which encompasses not only the education work but also her performing, recording and song-writing career.
Since 2004 Anna has been working a lot with very young children and their parents, and through the Creative Partnerships project in Coventry, 2nd Skin, she met and formed working relationships with all four artists from TheVERYidea.
Some of Anna's education work involves being a project-musician facilitating creativity for people in unusual settings, building sound/visual environments and making outdoor instruments. She also leads and runs music workshops and projects in all sorts of different venues and settings with people of ages.
Other aspects of Anna's work as an education-musician include working with dancers, working with people who have special needs or disabilities and working on family projects.
Anna is also a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist throughout her career. She has worked with Fairport Convention, Jacqui McShee (Pentangle), Rabbit Bundrick (The Who), Eddi Reader (Fairground Attraction), Steve Tilston and Clive Bunker (drums Jethro Tull) and others. She has made five albums with a sixth out soon and some of her songs have been recorded and toured by Fairport Convention.
Anna is also a music consultant for Sound Children (Drums For Schools) who make instruments for children aged 0 to 5. Through this new venture she is running workshops for practitioners and advising on musical instruments, ideas and approaches, including testing and improving instruments as well as helping to invent new ones. She journeyed to Bali for Sound Children with Matt Shaw to meet the makers of the instruments and encouraged the company to involve children from Bali in the artistic designs on the instruments. She has also designed annA rydeR’s Early Years Music Cards (a set of ideas to help EY practitioners with music, and she's even helped with design aspects of the Sound Children website including the creation of cartoon icons…
Anna sees music and sound-making as an integral part of life and much of the work she does encourages music and sound happening alongside and in tandem with anything else from visual art to history, from story-telling to identifying wildlife…
